The Power of Red Light Therapy
Have you heard of Red Light Therapy or RLT? I am sure you have if you have heard of red light saunas.
Red Light Therapy has MANY benefits, let’s chat about 4 of them + explore how RLT improves our health!
Let’s start with my favorite one, mitochondrial health. The mitochondria are fondly referred to as the powerhouse of our cells. These little mitochondria may be tiny but they are MIGHTY. They drive almost all of the metabolic processes in the body.
So how does red light therapy support these mitochondria?
I am going to keep it really simple and if you want to geek out and go deeper send reply to this post and let me know and we can keep the conversation going.
Our mitochondria have receptors for red and near-infrared light and these wavelengths activate the cells to produce more ATP for energy. When our cells increase energy output they can fuel all the processes that occur in our cells.
Next up RLT can improve bloodflow-
A barrier to ATP production is Nitric Oxide or NO for short. NO inhibits ATP production by attaching to a vital site in the energy production chain that is typically occupied by oxygen. Red and near-infrared light can displace NO from the location it shouldn’t be leading to ATP production efficiency. Once NO is released it acts as a vasodilator and relaxes the muscles in blood vessels leading to greater expansion and circulation in areas exposed to red light. How cool is that!
The third way RLT supports the body is by reducing oxidative stress + inflammation
In the body there are waste products of cellular respiration, one of which is called ROS which generates a mild form of stress throughout our body. Small amounts of ROS can be beneficial for our cells signaling the mitochondria to make more energy.
Since RLT supports ATP production it can also stimulate the production of small amounts of ROS that help speed healing and anti-inflammatory processes in the body.
Lastly and one of the coolest ones in my book is the creation of new mitochondria the fancy name is Mitochondrial Biogenesis, YES you read that right!
RLT may help increase the number of mitochondria in our cells because healthy mitochondria can make MORE healthy mitochondria!
Now lets make this even more simple by checking out a few more benefits of Red Light Therapy.
- Healthy skin through supporting the production of collagen + reducing inflammation
- Muscle recovery- drawing improved blood flow and circulation to the area
- Decreasing headache + migraine intensity and frequency (I use it for this often)
- Decreasing inflammation and improving joint health
- Rest, relaxation and improved sleep
- Increased energy
- And so much more!
I am sure you are wondering- HOW THE HECK can I get my own Red Light Therapy device and which one is the best?
Well I have a favorite because it is one of the best on the market, I can travel with it and it’s so safe and easy to use even my kids can use it!
I use the LUMEBOX you can read on their website WHY it is so fabulous and because you are here I am going to share an exclusive discount for you- CLICK HERE
Here are a few ways to use my favorite Red Light Therapy device the LUMEBOX to support your mitochondrial health.
- 5-6 minutes of red light during breathwork for healthy skin, and a mood and energy boost.
- Pre- and post-workout, in combined RED + NIR mode, over the muscle groups of focus for a 12-minute cycle. This may help decrease excess inflammation, reduce soreness, and improve recovery.
- 1-2 hours before bed, for 12 minutes on the back of the neck in NIR mode, to support better rest and re-energize the mitochondria.
