Croutons, Crackers, Cookies & Celiac Disease
What do croutons, crackers and cookies all have in common aside from starting with the letter “C”… they were all foods I was unable to eat when I was first diagnosed with Celiac Disease.
I shouldn’t say I was unable… more like there were no good options… they either contained gluten or tasted like trash.
Years and years later and guess what… there are hundreds of gluten free options whether you make them yourself or you purchase them from the store.
Here is the problem with store bought items that are gluten free
- They are loaded with junky ingredients- don’t get me wrong there are some “healthier” options, but they typically have many ingredients in them that are not good for your body
- The sugar content is the same and sometimes higher because they are trying to make it taste “normal”
- They aren’t any healthier- Gluten Free being Healthy is a common misconception
So what should you do to eat healthy and gluten free?
5 tips below
- Make food from scratch, I know it sounds time consuming, but it is worth it to know you have safe food for you that is healthy and nourishing for your needs
- Find flours that you like to bake and cook with. Your favorite might not be the same as mine, I LOVE Ottos Cassava flour for many things but you might prefer rice flour, or something else
- If making food from scratch is not your jam then look for healthy gluten free alternatives – try to keep the ingredients to 5 or less
- Look online for companies who are certified gluten free
- Remember that if you eat a food that doesn’t agree with you that is marked gluten free, check the packaging to see if it is made on shared equipment or in the same facility as wheat and or gluten.
*Bonus- Eat whole foods like fresh fruits and veggies and avoid processed foods.
